seem，appear，look三个词都可以表示“看起来…”，但具体用时又不能完全相互替代，这时我们就需要了解三者之间的区别。

seem

v. （涉及推断）似乎，看来；（用于表示谨慎、礼貌或委婉）好像，可能

appear

v. 出现，呈现；首次使用，起源；出庭；演出，出场；出版，发表；记载，提及；看来

look

v. 看；故意不理睬（某人），装作没有看见（某人）；注意；与……外表相似；看起来像(look like)

区别

1.含义上的区别

Seem：

根据一定的事实判断，往往接近事实；

We seem destined never to meet.

我们看起来像是命中注定无缘相见。

appear：

指根据事物的外表表象做出判断的，但实质上并不一定如此;

She will appear in court tomorrow.

她明天出庭。

look：

根据视觉印象而得出的判断，实质上也可能如此。

You look lovely, Marcia.

你看起来很美，马西娅。

2.用法上的区别

①.look 可用于进行时，而seem，appear 一般不能。

Things are looking pretty good!

形势看来很不错！

②.appear 和 seem 之后可接动词不定式的一般式、完成式以及其他形式，而 look之后除了能接to be 结构外，不接其它动词不定式形式。

At dusk bats appear in vast numbers.

蝙蝠于傍晚时分大批出现。

They seem an ill-assorted couple.

他俩似乎不般配。

③.look,seem 能与like连接,译为“看上去像”，appear 不能。

They look like stars to the naked eye.

用肉眼看上去它们像星星。

It doesn't seem like this huge fantasy.

它似乎不像这个巨大的幻想。

④.seem,look 后均可接 as if，as though 引导的表语从句，从句中既可用陈述语气也可用虚拟语气，appear 则不能。

"Us mustn't seem as if us was watchin' him too close," said Dickon.

“我们不能让它觉得我们离他太近了。”狄肯说。

You look as if you haven't got a care in the world !

你看上去好像一丝牵挂都没有！

⑤.appear 和seem 均可接 that 引导的从句，look 不能。

It would appear that this was a major problem.

看来这是个主要的问题。

It would seem that we all agree.

我们大家似乎都同意。

⑥.appear 和 seem 可用于there be 结构中，而look 不能。

However, it does appear that there are plenty of customers.

然而，看起来顾客还是很多的。

There are always new projects which seem to put the reunion back further.

总是有一些新项目，似乎还要把这次团聚再往后推迟。
